What is root canal treatment?
The purpose of root canal treatment is to remove the inflamed tissue or bacteria inside the root canal and thus allow the surrounding tissues to heal. The pulp may become inflamed or may die if either there is significant decay in a tooth, if there is a large restoration (filling or crown) or if the tooth has been subjected to trauma. The inflamed pulp may cause toothache or remain pain-free.
A complex system:
The root canal system, especially in molars, is often complex and difficult to clean well. This is why many general dentists prefer to refer these cases to a specialist who has the training. A specialist will use a surgical microscope during treatment, to magnify the tooth to approximately x20, to enhance success rates.
What is an Endodontist?
An endodontist is a dental surgeon who specializes in treating endodontic problems (endo-within, dontic-tooth). In general, this involves root canal treatment.
We will take an x-ray of your tooth and then administer a local anesthetic.
A ‘dental dam’ is fitted to isolate the tooth. A small opening will be made in the crown of the tooth.
The infected tooth is cleaned disinfected and sealed with a sealant material called gutta-percha. This completely seals the root canals.
Once we are happy that the tooth is infection free we will restore it with a new restoration to protect the tooth.
Due to the enhanced procedures provided and the level of complexity of most of the referred cases, treatment is very time consuming. The following guidelines on fees are given so you can discuss this with your Endodontist.
